A public memorial for Eric Garner on Staten Island was reportedly burned on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to the publication Vocativ.
Garner’s daughter, Erica, took to Twitter to reportedly state that she believed that the fire at her dad’s memorial was intentionally set, according to NY Daily News.
“lord forgive these evil ppl who burned down POPS memorial this is really sick my struggle still cont.#anonymouopfurguson #OpICantBreathe,” tweeted Erica.
A police source reportedly stated that the fire that burned part of the Eric Garner memorial on Staten Island was accidental.
“Candles under plexiglass caused the fire and damaged the memorial,” the source stated.
Earlier on Monday, Rev. Al Sharpton along with roughly 100 people, reportedly gathered at the memorial site to honor Dr. Martin Luther King with a vigil. Erica Garner reportedly delivered a speech to honor King, according to The Week.
The memorial spot reportedly marks the spot where Garner was choked to death by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo. Cops were reportedly trying to handcuff Garner for selling loose cigarettes when he died on July 17.
