"American Horror Story" season 5 will be a huge departure from the fourth season, but could the changes be in line with Jessica Lange's misgivings about signing on for another year?
In an interview with TVLine, FX president John Landgraf was quite hesitant to tease spoilers regarding next season but he did say that it's going to be "very different."
"One of the things I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast," he said. "I think there's going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to, say, between Book 3 [Coven] and 4 [Freak Show]."
Jessica Lange previously told Entertainment Weekly that being in "American Horror Story" takes up a lot of time and commitment.
"It's like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row," she said. "I want to have more time to myself I guess."
But she did not close her doors to coming back once more after a bit of a rest. "Once it's over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time."
With creator Ryan Murphy insisting on total secrecy, the Internet is awash with fan theories on the possible plot for "American Horror Story" season 5. Among them is that it's going to take place in space or will delve on the Operation Top Hat by the US Army Chemical Corps in 1953.
Ryan Murphy dismissed the space talks to Entertainment Weekly, "No. We're not doing space. Because space is not in America. It's American Horror Story not Intergalactic Horror Story."
Vanity Fair, meanwhile, noted how the franchise has alternated between the past and the present, which would suggest that "American Horror Story" season 5 will take place in a modern setting.
