Emma Watson is a spokesperson for the HeForShe campaign, the UN Women solidarity effort that works to engage men and boys in the fight for gender equality. The movement has attracted high profile supporters such as Desmond Tutu, Prince Harry, Hilary Clinton, and Yoko Ono.
Watson's September 2014 speech at the UN Headquarters in New York City launched the HeForShe campaign, and became a social media phenomenon.
Viewed over 11 million times, the video of the speech went viral and inspired men from around the world to sign the petition and commit to fighting for women's rights.
In Friday's speech in Davos, Emma Watson presented the HeForShe campaign's latest initiative, called the Impact 10x10x10 pilot project. The 2015 endeavor urges governments, companies and universities to unite in fighting to "bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally."
"I've been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going, and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have power and equality, economically and politically," said the "Harry Potter" actress.
"It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments, and in our work places," urged the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
"They know that the world is being held back in every way, because they are not. Women share this planet 50/50 and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped," explained Emma Watson in her Davos speech.
