Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Pique welcomed their second baby, they named Sasha, via caesarian section in a Barcelona hospital on Thursday night.
After the birth of baby Sasha, Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Pique released a statement:
"We are happy to announce the birth of Sasha Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué.
"The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means 'defender of mankind' and 'warrior,'" it said.
According to Daily Mail, reps from the hospital have said that both Shakira and baby Sasha are in "excellent health."
Even before baby Sasha was born, he was already participating in a good cause with Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Pique joining UNICEF's World Baby Showers.
The World Baby Shower campaign by Shakira and UNICEF aims to provide babies a healthy start in life.
"As part of our new baby celebration, we can give vulnerable babies a brighter beginning. This is more than a shower, it's a global movement to save lives," the UNICEF website said.
Those who are willing to participate are asked to select from the "Inspired Gift" registry to "send real life saving items delivered to vulnerable children around the world."
During the 2013 campaign Shakira also used her baby bump, for her first son Milan, to encourage people to donate in the World Baby Shower.
"With the explosion of social media, celebrities aren't the only ones who have platforms that can reach mass audiences, and we want this movement to keep going long after our baby shower has ended, so we want to invite them to host their own baby showers with UNICEF as well," she said.
The first campaign raised enough money to send polio vaccines to 80,000 children and four tons of food for malnourished kids.
Shakira's baby Sasha was born January 29 at 9:54 p.m.
