"Zoolander 2" is really happening and there are reports that it will be shot in Rome. According to an Italian website Bad Taste, the cast and crew will shoot some scenes around The Eternal City and at the studio of Cinecitta this spring.
They also reported that the filming will take around 12 weeks and will feature a cast of both American and Italian actors. Confirming this news was the Mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, who had his photo taken together with Ben Stiller.
Rome has attracted many Hollywood producers because of its beautiful scenery. Just recently, director Timur Bekmambetov started the principal photography of the "Ben-Hur" remake in the city. According to Screen Rant, the new James Bond movie "Spectre" will shoot some scenes in Rome in the following weeks before the cast and crew of "Zoolander 2" start filming.
Fans will see familiar faces in the sequel as Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Christine Taylor reprise their role as Derek Zoolander, Hansel, Mugatu, and Matilda Jeffries respectively. Newcomer Penelope Cruz will be joining the cast, but there isn't any confirmation yet as to what her role will be. She could probably be one of the Italian models since we have confirmed that the movie will be set in Rome.
Another newbie is rumored to join the "Zoolander 2" cast and that is Cara Delevingne. "Ben and producers want a big-name model for the film and they need to be jokers and full of natural comedy," a source told The Sun. "They are still working out what the exact role will be but it's likely to include a lot of goofing around."
"Zoolander" was released in 2001 and it took them more than 13 years to finally come up with a sequel. Justin Theroux, who had a cameo in the first film, co-wrote the script of the second installment together with Ben Stiller. He was supposed to the direct the new movie, but decided to pass it to Stiller.
Some people are worried that it may end up a flop just like what happened to "Dumb and Dumber To", which starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The sequel received negative reviews so hopefully "Zoolander 2" won't suffer the same fate.
