"Fifty Shades of Grey" smashed box-office records for February as it earned $93 million in the US alone. Meanwhile, cast Dakota Johnson teased David Letterman about his crush on her mother Melanie Griffith.
With $173 more outside of domestic tickets, the total box-office sales for "Fifty Shades of Grey" hit $266 million.
According to The Guardian, even with all the hype surrounding the film, the results still far exceeded the expectations.
"Even without the creative accountancy, Fifty Shades would have beaten the previous record for the highest worldwide debut for an R-rated film, 'The Matrix Revolutions' $117m in 2003," it said.
Even more surprising about the box-office sales for "Fifty Shades of Grey" is the records it shattered in countries under the former eastern bloc like Hungary, Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Slovakia.
The article went on to compare "Fifty Shades of Grey" to the 1992 film, "Basic Instinct" starring Sharon Stone, which also hinted at more sex than it shown. That racy movie earned $352.9 million, or nearly $600 million when adjusted for inflation.
But mainstreaming the film helped it cross over from just sex scenes into a "date movie," which helped the box-office records of "Fifty Shades as Well."
Meantime, Dakota Johnson was one of the guests for "David Letterman Show" where she teased him about his old crush on Melanie Griffith.
"On the way here, my mom told me to tell you that she loves you. She really meant it!" she said.
He replied, "I know, and here's something I will tell you. Your mom used to come on the show all the time, and I really loved your mom."
Referencing the bondage theme on her new movie "Fifty Shades of Grey," Dakota Johnson jokingly confronted the comedian host, "She brought you handcuffs one time ... so, are you my dad?"
