"Big Hero 6" was a huge hit, both at the box office and among critics so it's no surprise that a sequel is in the works. The helmsmen for the animated superhero film share their thoughts about a "Big Hero 7."
Many believe that the great success of the Disney film would definitely mean a sequel, and soon. But the film's co-director Chris Williams dashed these hopes.
"No sequel will ever get made unless the directors want one and feel strongly that there is a story that needs to be told," the "Bolt" director said, in a report by Movie Pilot.
"If it's not a great story, it won't be a great movie. The crew deserves a great story. And we have expectations from the audience, who grew up with Disney animation. They deserve a great story too," The filmmaker shared further.
Apparently, Disney has a new approach when it comes to making sequels. They are reportedly focused on "elevating storytelling and putting filmmakers in the center of the process." This means that sequels will only get made if the members of the creative team are able to come up with an idea that is worthy of being one.
But that does not mean that "Big Hero 7" won't happen.
The film's other director, Don Hall had very promising things to say about a sequel in a November 2014 interview with Creative Screen Writing.
"We'll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we're exhausted from the ordeal of making it," the "Winnie the Pooh" director shared.
"We haven't talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal," the filmmaker added.
So that makes the idea of the gang returning for a sequel very possible, though not anytime soon. The promise is that if "Big Hero 7" does get made, then it is because there is a story worth telling and not because Disney is out for a quick buck, or just trying to meet fans' demands.
