British actor Eddie Redmayne won his first best actor Oscar for “The Theory of Everything,” and it wasn't much of a surprise given his victories at the SAG Awards nad Golden Globe for the same category.
In his acceptance speech at the Academy, the actor thanked his "staggering partner in crime," co-star Felicity Jones, and his "ferocious but incredibly kind" director James Marsh.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Eddie Redmayne said he could not wait to return to England to share the good news to Stephen Hawking, whom he portrayed in the Best Picture nominee.
"I think I will certainly go to Cambridge at some point to see Stephen, Jane [Wilde Hawking], Jonathan [Jones] and the Hawking children," he shared of his plans.
"They have been so kind to us the whole way through this process. Our responsibility to tell their story truthfully and authentically, we felt it, so their support throughout has been amazing."
Eddie Redmayne spoke highly of Hawking and exclaimed that he wouldn't have won the award for "Theory of Everything" without the support and guidance of Hawking. He also praised the physicist's inspiring outlook in life and how he beat the odds of his ALS condition.
"For Stephen, the illness was of very little interest to him after he was diagnosed," the actor explained. "He is someone who lives forward and lives passionately, so similarly I didn't want the film to be about the physicality. I wanted to have the physicality so embedded with me so we could play the human story and the love story."
"I went to ALS clinics in London for about four months with a choreographer, and she helped to train my muscles to sustain those positions for long periods of time," he shared.
