The edgy man-bun has been rocked by A-list celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Jared Leto, Brandon Cooper and Orlando Bloom. When Oscar nominations snub 2015 actor Jake Gyllenhaal wanted to sport it for "Nightcrawler," however, the idea was largely panned.
The "Donnie Darko" actor reportedly had to convince a panel of big-shot producers that he wanted to wear his hair in a man-bun as Louis Bloom in his new dark thriller. Dan Gilroy, the film's director and screenwriter told USA Today that the idea wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms.
"A week before shooting Jake said, 'I'd like to put my hair in this man-bun (each time) before the character does something larcenous,'" the writer shared. "There were people who didn't want that to happen. But I was supportive of it."
It was also the Oscar nominations snub 2015 star who wanted to lose 30 pounds for the role of the L.A. cameraman, as well as grow his hair long. Gilroy's initial vision was Jake sporting a short, military crew cut but he ended up listening to the "Jarhead" actor anyway.
"Our process was, let's try stuff. It's an outlandish idea, but let's try it," the husband of Rene Russo relayed.
Rgarding the "Brokeback Mountain" star's idea to wear a man-bun, the first-time director talked about decision-makers who were nervous about the idea.
"Anytime people put up money, producers and things, and you're changing the star element in ways that are unpredictable," he shared.
"People get nervous. There was already the weight loss. He lost 27 pounds. There was great consternation. He looked like a ghoul. He looked utterly un-Jakelike," the "Bourne Legacy" writer continued.
In the end, the long hair and man-bun were victorious. Jake's character ended up putting his hair up every time he was up to no good, such as sneaking into someone's residence to take footage.
"It was a functional thing, (Louis Bloom) didn't want his hair to get into the way," explained Gilroy.
Though Jake Gyllenhaal was one of those listed in the Oscar nominations snub 2015, Gilroy's screenplay got the Academy's nod. Critics gave the film rave reviews and the actor got to wear the man-bun that he wanted.
