Gina Carano gave her thoughts on the upcoming MMA weekend featuring women fighters. As a pioneer of the sport, she recalled how her passion for it "destroyed the negativity" that comes with being a woman athlete.
In an interview with journalist Ariel Helwani reported by cagepages.com, Henry Cavill's former girlfriend communicated her point of view "in an articulate and classy manner."
"I think about all the times I was called a "pet project" and was laughed at and asked when I was doing to get a real job, but how I could care less because the passion I felt while I was training and fighting completely destroyed the negativity, disarmed it completely," she said.
"I see all the people who said it would never be possible, how they'd never support women fighting in a cage and vowed never to watch, who are now the same people announcing these women's fights with mind blown enthusiasm, doing their pad work, wrestling with them, being their training partners, and now huge fans and coaching these amazing athletes," Gina Carano added.
Gina Carano also paid tribute to women in mixed martial arts for being "passionate as they ever were" no matter what negative situation they have been in. Henry Cavill's former girlfriend also expressed her joy in being part of the Women's MMA history.
"I smile so big it brings tears to my eyes because somehow I was blessed to be a small part of the evolution," she added.
Meanwhile, current UFC female bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey, who will defend her title on Saturday night at UFC 184 against Cat Zingano, is more than willing to meet Gina Carano in the cage.
According to fightline.com, the women champ is not interested in fighting Cris "Cyborg" Justino but she's willing to provide a catchweight bout for Henry Cavill's former girlfriend.
"No, I'm not making an exception for a cheater," said Rousey. "The only one I'll make an exception for is Gina Carano because she's such a pioneer in the sport.
