Xiaomi Yi Camera Specs, Features: $64 Action Camera Dubbed As GoPro Killer

GoPro has established itself as a world-class action camera. The only problem is their latest model, the GoPro Hero 4, retails for an average of $399 to $500 and additional price will depend on accessories.

The price might come off as a bit steep especially for occasional vacationers who only want a rugged little camera. This is where Xiaomi comes in. The Chinese smartphone maker recently its $64 Yi Action Camera, that would give GoPro's entry-level device a run for its money.

According to Digital Trends, the Xiaomi Yi Action comes with a 16MP Sony Exmor R sensor promises to shoot up to 60 frames per second on a 1080p. This is impressive considering that its rival can only do and shoot 30 frames per second. Its 64GB, twice of what users get with the GoPro, can also store a fair amount of 1080p 60fps video. The Xiaomi GoPro like camera can also shoot up to 40m underwater, which is probably one of the most important features one is looking for in an action camera.

It's companion app is also very useful as it comes with tools that allow editing and sharing of footage. The Xiaomi action camera also has a built in Wi-Fi connectivity perfect for those who want to send images directly to their smartphone.

Ubergizmo reported that Xiaomi has yet to provide cases or accessories with its new action camera. The company, however, claim that there will be a "rich variety of accessories" made available that would allow users to attach the camera to themselves, helmets and even their pets, much like the GoPro.

Inspite of going head-on with the GoPro, Xiaomi claims that it did not actually intend to clone the popular action camera.

CEO Lei Jun told Stratechery that they want to build a company that's an "internet of all things." Xiaomi wants to offer a variety of devices with an affordable price tag in the hopes that the consumers keep coming back to buy their products.

GoPro retails at $64, half price of the entry level GoPro. It also comes in an $80 bundle option, that comes with a selfie stick, along with your choice of a white or olive-colored camera body.
