Surprise! Not many would have speculated comedian Trevor Noah to take over "The Daily Show" from host Jon Stewart but that's exactly what Comedy Central announced Monday.
While fans were still speculating who'd take over "The Daily Show" from departing host Jon Stewart, Comedy Central on Monday, March 30 named Trevor Noah the new host of the late-night talk show.
The 31-year-old comedian has contributed to "The Daily Show" a few times in recent months.
TheVancouverSun noted that Noah made his Daily Show debut late last year in a segment called Spot the Africa, a satirical segment comparing socioeconomic development in the United States versus the same in numerous African countries.
Following Comedy Central's early morning announcement, Jon Stewart called Noah a "tremendous comic and talent that we've loved working with."
Stewart further added that he may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it.
Looks like Noah has got Jon Stewart's seal of approval.
TheWashingtonPost noted, although Noah may be a surprising choice for the greater viewing public, the South African political satirist shot to the top of Comedy Central's short list for the job soon after Jon Stewart announced his departure in early Feb., according to Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless.
Describing the process as less of an audition and more of multiple conversations, Ganeless noted that Noah is fascinating and as he shared his vision for the show. According to Ganeless, the more time they spent with him, the more they realized he is going to be incredible at this job.
In addition, Noah has an international presence, and hosted a late-night talk in South Africa, "Tonight With Trevor Noah."
Noah was the subject of a 2011 documentary film by David Paul Meyer, "You Laugh but Its True," which followed his career in post-apartheid South Africa. Noah has also appeared on Jay Leno and David Letterman.
ChicagoTribune noted that Noah will join writer-comedian Larry Wilmore who replaced Stephen Colbert back in Jan. in the half-hour slot following "The Daily Show."
When Jon Stewart steps down and Noah takes over from him, Comedy Central will have completely remade the late-night talk show that not only gave critical acclaim to the network but also its identity.
