The downloads of the leaked episodes for "Game of Thrones" season 5 has nearly breached the million mark, as HBO is investigating the snafu.

The first four episodes of the HBO hit series found their way to torrent and streaming sites.

According to Variety, since the "Game of Thrones" season 5 leak, the first four episodes were already downloaded over 550,000 times at 7 a.m. of Sunday.

By 5 p.m. of the same date, the download already reached 1.7 million.

In a statement sent to Daily Mail, HBO said, "Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them. We're actively assessing how this breach occurred."

The statement did not specify if sanctions will be meted for those responsible for the "Game of Thrones" season 5 leak.

This shouldn't come as a surprise since "Game of Thrones" hold the distinction as the most pirated show in the world.

"Anti-piracy company Irdeto said that episodes from 'Game of Thrones's' first four seasons were illegally downloaded more than seven million times between February and April 2015," it said. "The astounding figure is a 45 per cent jump over the same period from 2014 for the show, which debuted in 2011."

The leaked episodes of "Game of Thrones" season 5 are not a fake. They are reportedly copied from a screener submitted to reviewers and come in a 480p video format. The digital watermarks were also blurred out.

The "Game of Thrones" season 5 leak came on the heels of the interview of Greg Spence, the producer in charge of post-production, with Denver Post where he expressed concern about spoilers for the show.

"The cast is looping all over the world, sending files back and forth. Artists are working in special-effects houses all over the world. The files are watermarked, and editors have to confirm in writing that they've deleted them," he said.
