Looks like the WWE Universe wants to see the current WWE United States Champion John Cena go toe-to-toe with none other than the Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle.

Although Kurt Angle's highly publicized contract talks with WWE didn't come to fruition, it looks like WWE Universe wants to see him back in the four-sided ring. Angle, too, reportedly expressed interest in returning to WWE once his contract with TNA Wrestling expired. However, WWE wasn't quite interested in taking him back.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated, Angle said that WWE dealt with him like a nobody and refused to even meet the Olympic Gold medalist. Angle, 46, says that this year with TNA will be his final year as an active wrestler, unless World Wrestling Entertainment wants him to return. If that happens, there are quite a few opponents, new and old who'd be interesting match ups for Angle.

Reigning WWE United States Champion John Cena is one of them, Inquisitr noted.

In fact, the WWE web crew made a list of the top 5 people they wanted to see answer Cena's open challenge. The list covered NXT standouts and WWE legends, but the most intriguing matchup would be with Kurt Angle, who was one of the names mentioned.

"First time John Cena came out with routhless agression so mach Cena vs Kurt Angle would be cool," a fan commented.

In June 27, 2002, during an episode of "Smack Down," Angle laid out an open challenge, which was accepted by none other than Cena who made his WWE debut in that match. Angle defeated Cena in an aggressive match. As Cena made his WWE debut by accepting Angle's open challenge, it'd be apt if Angle returned to WWE by accepting Cena's open challenge.

That said, there are likely thin chances of Angle defeating Cena if he returned as the WWE likes to defeat wrestlers from the rival organization when they debut or return to the company. For instance, Sting's debut at WrestleMania resulted in Triple H defeating The Icon. Also, in 2012, John Cena defeated the returning Brock Lesnar at "Extreme Rules."

After his feud with Triple H ended at WrestleMania 31, Sting has not been seen. The top 5 contenders list even includes The Icon who should answer Cena open challenge for U.S. Championship, according to International Business Times.

Cena will square off against Rusev in a Russian Chain Match for the United States Championship at this Sunday's "Extreme Rules."

Do you think Kurt Angle can defeat John Cena if he returned to WWE? Will Cena be able to defend his United States Championship against Rusev or will it go back to the Bulgarian professional wrestler? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
