Ben Affleck admitted that he was embarrassed after finding out his roots that he tried to bury the truth about his slave owner ancestor on one of the episodes of PBS' show, "Finding Your Roots."
The "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" star finally addressed the reports that swirled the past couple of days, after Wikileaks published an email exchange between Sony executive Michael Lyton and the show's host, Henry Louis Gates Jr. which revealed that Ben Affleck tried to quash the story.
In a long Facebook post, Ben Affleck apologized for the controversy over his slave owner ancestor.
"I didn't want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed," the renowned humanitarian wrote. "The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth."
"I regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story. We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery," he added.
"It is an examination well worth continuing. I am glad that my story, however indirectly, will contribute to that discussion. While I don't like that the guy is an ancestor, I am happy that aspect of our country's history is being talked about," the "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" actor added.
Meanwhile, NY Daily News reported that PBS is launching an internal probe into the veracity of the report that Ben Affleck is allegedly trying to influence an episode of "Finding Your Roots" on his ancestor slave owner.
A statement released by the network read, "In order to gather the facts to determine whether or not all of PBS' editorial standards were observed, on Saturday, April 18th, we began an internal review. We have been moving forward deliberately yet swiftly to conduct this review."
