Since it appeared temporarily atop users' New Feed, more than $10 million has been contributed via Facebook's Donate button to aid earthquake recovery efforts in Nepal

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Facebook users have donated over $10 million to relief efforts in Nepal following a disastrous earthquake last weekend.

According to a Facebook post, the social networking site gave people the opportunity to support local relief networks in Nepal after the earthquake hit, and in two days they quickly topped $10 million.

But, that's not all, Zuckerberg said Facebook would contribute $2 million extra.

Mashable noted that just two days since the "donate now" button went live at the top of Facebook feeds across the world, Facebook users have proven that it is an extremely powerful tool.

"We've seen our community come together in some amazing ways since the earthquake in Nepal," Mark Zuckerberg wrote in the Facebook post.

Zuckerberg further stated that the donated amount will be used to support the International Medical Corps relief effort.

The devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on April 25 in the Himalayan nation and the death toll continues to rise. An army official has reportedly confirmed that as many as 15,000 may have perished, according to Adweek.

Zuckerberg noted that WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are being used in Nepal, as well as across the region, to get help in this time of crisis -- when the need to connect and share becomes even more important. In addition, aid workers are using Groups to coordinate and figure out how to get to affected areas while journalists and media outlets are using Instagram as their primary way to share photos of the events.

"It is inspiring to see our community coming together to help people in their time of need," Zuckerberg added.

The social networking giant has not released the amount given via the Donate button last year. The Nepal donation marks the first time Facebook has revealed the amount donated by users.
