The longest running scripted show on television just got just longer as Fox announced on Monday it has renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons.
The network's announcement included a boast from Homer:
"I've outlasted Letterman, Jon Stewart and McDreamy, because I have something they don't: a costly 200-donut-a-day addiction."
Homer said in reference to the retiring CBS Late show host as well as a long-time character on Grey's Anatomy who was killed on the show recently.
According to DeadlineHollywood, Fox has ordered for Seasons 27 and 28 to reach 625 episodes. Renewals of the much-loved animated sitcom have never been in doubt, only the prolonged negotiations with the show's voice cast have provided the only Simpsons drama.
The Simpsons cast includes 57-year-old Dan Castellaneta, as dad Homer and his trademark d'oh, and Julie Kavner, as mom Marge.
A two-season renewal for The Simpsons implies that the series from Al Jean and Matt Groening will extend through season 28, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
The Simpsons has proved a money machine, with a big-screen movie, video games, merchandise and a Universal Studio Ride.
The show continues to attract a steady audience, especially young men.
According to a statement from FOX, the 26th season has been ranked among the top ten among men ages 18 to 34, while averaging 6.2 million viewers per episode.
The Simpsons joins a roster of returning scripted programming that includes Family Guy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, New Girl, Empire and Gotham as well as Sleepy Hollow. Other series renewals, pickups, and cancellations are slated to come this week ahead of Fox's upfront presentation next week.
The series created by Matt Groening, is a satirical depiction of a middle class American lifestyle represented by the Simpsons family, which consists of the dad, Homer, the mom Marge and their children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie who rarely speaks.
