"The Following" series has been officially cancelled by Fox to the disappointment of fans. Actor Kevin Bacon took to Twitter to thank those who have supported the series.

He wrote: "I really cant believe it's over... thank you for a memorable 3 seasons. Quoth The Raven.. ‪#TheFollowing"

According to Inquistr, although the two-hour series finale of "The Following" aired last Monday, May 18, several fans were still hoping that the show will carry on. Kevin Bacon, however, have already accepted the cancellation, adding that he is not waiting for any announcement to be revealed soon.

"Big love to all of our loyal fans. It's been an honor to work for you. Sweat, tears, and lots of Blood! Enjoy the final four ‪#THEFOLLOWING" he tweeted.

It has been rumored that "The Following" could be picked up for a season 4 by Hulu, but it's a long shot. Show runners could not blame fans for expecting another season, after all the series ended with a cliff hanger.

Speaking to Hollywood Life, series executive producer Alexi Hawley revealed what could possibly happen to Ryan Hardy.

"Season four would have been Ryan Hardy as vigilante. Ryan Hardy, lone wolf. Ultimately, the end of the season is Ryan making a very powerful sacrifice," he said.

"In theory, next season would be about him trying to get back, if it all possible, [and] take out every single person that was a threat and get back home again."

Despite receiving several unsatisfied comments from fans, Hardy revealed that this was the ending that they wanted to give the fans. He added that he really did not know if "The Following" will be renewed or cancelled for season 4, thus, they decided to play it safe.

"At the end of the day, this is the story we wanted to tell this season, it's the story we've been building up for for 15 episodes. For us, this answered the questions we had posed for three seasons about Ryan whether he could truly be happy outside of his obsessions."
