On Wednesday, June 3, UFC boss Dana White announced two upcoming mega bouts with title implications.
While Luke Rockhold gets a shot at Chris Weidman's UFC middleweight championship in the near future, Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson will lock horns over the UFC light heavyweight title, according to UFC Tonight.
The mixed martial arts promotion company neither revealed a date nor venue for either bout, however both bouts are main event worthy and can draw some big pay-per-view numbers.
Chris Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold
Fresh from his win over Vitor Belfort at UFC 187, UFC middleweight champion, Weidman is now scheduled to go one-on-one with former Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold later this year.
White said, "We don't have that fight set up yet, we don't know when it's going to be but that will be the fight. Luke Rockhold will get the next shot at the title."
Rockhold has been working hard to get the next shot at the belt following his win over UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in the second round back in April, according to records on FOX Sports.
The California native will now get his wish to go one on one with Weidman for the UFC title. Weidman is a three-time defending champion.
Daniel Cormier vs. Alexander Gustafsson
The recently crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier wanted to defend his title as soon as he was able and since crushing Anthony Johnson, it looked like Cormier might be doing against his new rival Ryan Bader.
Dana White's Wednesday announcement was clearly contrary to that.
White said that UFC is "actually looking at possibly Alexander Gustafsson," thus sitting aside the Cormier-Bader stalk, Sherdog noted.
Though White did not officially confirm the bout, UFC did on their official website, confirming that the two fighters will meet with a date and venue still to be announced.
Rumors doing rounds on social media hinted that the 205-pound championship will headline UFC 191, however according to the champion; he won't be fighting on that card. Cormier confirmed by tweeting, "Fighting Gustafsson not ufc 191 #andstill."
UFC 191 was officially announced on Wednesday, June 3, to have landed at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.
