Stan Wawrinka won over ATP World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in French Open championship with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory Sunday, according to Washington Post, and he's wearing funky shorts to boot!
The Swiss man prevented his Serbian opponent from getting a career Grandslam, causing Novak Djokovic to get emotional as he received a standing ovation at French Open after the match. Djokovic only had nice things to say about the player who deprived him of victory at the clay court.
"There are more important things in life - personality and respect," Djokovic reportedly said, according to Yahoo! News. "I have a big respect for you. You are a great champion with a big heart. You deserve that title."
Besides his powerful shots against Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka had one more thing that caught tennis enthusiasts' attention throughout the game: his shorts. The Swiss player's non-conventional pink plaid shorts caused a lot of buzz throughout the match.
Stan Wawrinka did not shy away from the media attention focused on his taste in tennis apparel. The new French Open champion even draped the much-talked-about shorts over the table in front of him at his final French Open news conference.
"It's just like everybody talk about that shorts," Wawrinka reportedly said. "I quite like them. Apparently I'm the only one. They will be in the museum of Roland Garros. You will see my shorts every day if you want."
Even Andy Murray's mother, Judy Murray, took note of Wawrinka's shorts in her tweet: "If Stan wins the French Open today, everyone will remember what he wore. Seriously hot pants :-) @rolandgarros."
However, the plaid shorts trend in professional tennis may not be catching on with players at the majors anytime soon. The next Grandslam tournament, Wimbledon, has an all-white dress code and even Stan Wawrinka will not be able to sport his "lucky shorts" at the All England Club.
