"Bates Motel" has been renewed for season 4 and 5 before the series ends given its low ratings.
"The vision of our incredible creative team has exposed the steady breakdown of the relationship between Norman and Norma Bates. We are thrilled to bring fans two more seasons to witness the next stages of Norman's transformation into the most notorious psychopath in cinematic history," said A&E executive vice president Rob Sharenow, via Deadline.
"Bates Motel" co-creator Carlton Cuse revealed that the producers have foreseen that the series will be picked out for two more seasons. He revealed that the writers actually had the entire five seasons planned out.
"[Executive producer Kerry Ehrin] and I have a pretty clear road map," he told reporters during a conference call early this year, via IB Times.
"We're just finishing the third season right now, and we feel pretty strong that there's two more seasons in the show. So we have a pretty clear plan of where we want to go, and we want to bring the story to its inevitable conclusion," he added.
Cuse revealed that he is open to the idea of the series ending in just five seasons. The co-creator said that the story would have reached its conclusion by then.
"This is not a show that should run for 10 years," he told Variety.
"We feel like this year, we'll have a pretty good sense of when it's gonna end ... a couple more seasons after that, perhaps?"
Cuse added that in season 3, fans can expect more episodes to focus on Norma (Vera Farmiga) and Sheriff Romero's relationship (Nestor Carbonell).
"I certainly would advocate for it. We love them," producer Kerry Ehrin told Variety.
"Romero's an awesome character, and they're very interesting as a couple because they're so similar - they're both control freaks. That should be really fun and explosive. There's a lot of stuff to work with there."
