Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed have been very vocal about their advocacy to help the animals and recently he posted a clip on his Instagram on the day he spent nursing ailing birds back to health at the International Bird Rescue and Marine Mammal Center.

On his Instagram, "The Vampire Diaries" star shared the photo of him nursing a Pelican which he captioned, "So glad I got to hang with this beautiful girl. Being a bayou boy from Louisiana, I grew up with these magnificent creatures. She's home now in the wild on the Pacific Ocean as of yesterday because #ILoveWildlife so... #HowDoYouLoveWildLife ? Now, I'm off to San Diego! You coming???? #WBSDCC !"

Earlier, he shared a video on Instagram along with the caption, "Such an amazing day-Just released these beautiful rehabilitated birds into the wild thanks to international bird rescue. This is why #ILoveWildlife #HowDoYouLoveWildLife #ad Check out this video- it was an incredible and emotional moment for me."

Ian Somerhalder has a long relationship with animals and "The Vampire Diaries" star intends to deepen his commitment, along with wife Nikki Reed, through his Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which seeks to launch a sanctuary in the future.

"The Vampire Diaries" star only had good words for Nikki Reed, whom she married in Malibu on April 26.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Ian Somerhalder said, "The amount of compassion fueled by passion that she puts into the world in regards to animals is second to none."

"The Vampire Diaries" star continued, "I mean she changes her house into a rescue and a foster home for so many animals and has taken so much time and energy and money of her own with her family, particularly her mom, to foster animals and make sure that they are safe."

"That in and of itself is really something that solidifies us as a unit that really is an amazing thing to wake up to every morning."
