With all eyes on D'Angelo Russell after surpassing presumptive second pick Jahlil Okafor when the Los Angeles Lakers picked him over the 6'11 center, the rookie point guard didn't actually vindicate himself for the NBA Summer League 2015.
The LA Times' Bill Plaschke wrote that on Monday, during the Los Angeles Lakers match vs. the New York Knicks, D'Angelo Russell was even benched by NBA Summer League 2015 coach Mark Madsen since "he could no longer be trusted with the basketball, having committed twice as many turnovers - eight - as his combined baskets and assist."
"He has occasionally shown glimpses of his potential during these three summer league games. But with 10 assists and 20 turnovers overall, mostly he has looked like the 19-year-old kid who is trying to pass the ball through windows that don't exist, aiming directly for players who aren't there," he said.
Bill Plaschke stopped short of calling D'Angelo Russell a bust, as he also slammed other young players like Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson.
Zach Harper of CBS Sports noted that D'Angelo Russell "only racked up five assists in the half court offense in 82 minutes on the field. It's that lack of scoring or creating points that has left the Lakers looking flat in the majority of their three games."
But D'Angelo Russell is confident that he can shed off the bust tag when he adjusts to the game in the NBA level, unlike what he has shown in the summer league 2015 so far. He also acknowledged that his high turnover rate is killing the team.
"Summer League is great for the adjustment process," the No. 2 pick of the Los Angeles Lakers said. "I feel like I'm going to get better every game, every practice. Once I get under the system and get the hang of it a little better, I think the better I'll possibly be."
