"That Winter The Wind Blows" Song Hye Kyo was asked why she always chooses difficult roles.
Almost always people judge others based on physical appearances. This is more the case when the person being analyzed is someone who is in the spotlight. A celebrity's "image" is also the result of the widely accepted opinion of them. For actress Song Hye Kyo, her purely innocent image led her to exactly those types of roles.
When we met Song Hye Kyo however, it was obvious that an assumption about a person is only an assumption and not the truth. Unlike her fragile and lovely image, comments like "In the past, I didn't have to blow my nose when I cried but now that I'm old now, I have to keep blowing my nose" and "Sometimes I even forget how old I am" show Song Hye Kyo's down-to-earth side that people have never seen before.
** "A Safe and Stable Choice Isn't Fun For Me"
It's very strange. Song Hye Kyo is one of the most popular actresses in Korea but does not depend on the love of her fans to continue her career. She is also not the type to hold onto the image that her fans created for her.
Song Hye Kyo stated, "I can't ignore the opinions of the fans and the viewers who are constantly watching but the only way they will be able to concentrate on a film or a drama is if I am able to portray my character effectively. I didn't make choices with something specific in my head but the expectations of the people didn't always agree with what I had in mind."
When Song Hye Kyo was asked why she avoids safe and stable choices, she answered, "I have to want to work on that act. That is the only way I will do it." If then, why is it that she only goes for difficult roles? Song Hye Kyo replied, "Safe and stable is not fun for me." She mentioned that she felt this way especially after working on "The World That They Live In" with the writer Noh Hui Kyung. Song Hye Kyo added, "Some roles appear to be too light hearted after working on a difficult role. After working on a difficult role, I felt that I wouldn't feel like I've accomplished anything if I worked on an easy role. If I felt that way, it would be hard for me to do well and the viewers would also have a hard time watching. This is a pro as well as a con of working with writer Noh Hui Kyung. After working with her, you tend to become more sensitive about the work you choose and more detailed."
** "I Would Prefer People to Not Expect So Much From Me"
Song Hye Kyo stated, "It feels good to be complimented but I received too many during 'That Winter The Wind Blows' all at the same time so I got a bit scared and it was strange." She appears to be very uncomfortable hearing compliments from people. Even the writer Noh Hui Kyung has been reported to have told her, "You need to learn how to accept compliments."
Song Hye Kyo continued, "If expectations are high, the level of disappointment is just as high. I received a lot of praise for my role in this drama but I am only human. It's not easy to come across another chance like this. Luck followed me in 'That Winter The Wind Blows' and everything just clicked so I was able to provide a good performance. However, in the next project, there may be something that is insufficient. In that sense, I wish people wouldn't expect so much."
After the success of the drama "That Winter The Wind Blows" Son Hye Kyo stated that she received a chance to continue her adventure. Even though Song Hye Kyo does not make decisions based on the expectations, she may be satisfying another set of expectations by doing so, if that makes sense. She may be fulfilling the expectations of her continuous success in her acting career and showing people the process of maturing as an actress.
Song Hye Kyo concluded, "I don't decide on a project after thinking about the outcome of it. I always begin with the hopes that it will turn out well. However there were a lot of projects that didn't turn out so well. However, now I am in my mid 30s and there is a lot of time in the future. Since 'That Winter' was so successful, I'm sure there will be good news for me in the movie industry."
