Avril Lavigne returns onstage over the weekend to perform at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. This is the first public performance of the “Complicated” singer since 2014 after she revealed that she has been diagnosed with Lyme disease.
Avril Lavigne said that she was definitely happy and honored to be back on stage. She also thanked everyone who supported her foundation.
"Honored to have performed my song Fly at the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics tonight. All proceeds go to support the Special Olympics. This was a very beautiful night for me," she captioned a photo on Instagram.
"Congratulations to all the athletes. Thank you to everyone who supports the Avril Lavigne Foundation. It has been a difficult year fighting through Lyme Disease for me and I am so happy to have made it on stage tonight for the first performance in a year."
"Thank you for having me and please enjoy my song 'Fly.' I wrote this song to encourage people who are facing challenges, to encourage strength and to empower."
Avril Lavigne was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014. The singer revealed that she has visited several experts but they could not identify what was wrong with her at first.
"I was seeing every specialist, and literally like the top doctors. It was so stupid. They would pull up their computer and be like, 'Chronic fatigue syndrome' or 'Why don't you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?' or 'Are you depressed?'" she told Good Morning America.
"This is what they do to a lot of people that have Lyme disease. They don't have an answer for them, so they tell them,'You're crazy.'"
After several months, Avril Lavigne finally found a Lyme disease specialist, which helped her further understand what she has been going through. Although the singer may not have fully recovered, she shared that she feels that she is getting stronger each day.
"I'm just really grateful to know that I will make a 100 percent recovery," she said.
