Friends, family and fans paid their heartfelt respects to American singing sensation, Aaliyah. She died in a tragic plane crash on August 25, 2001, at the age of 22.
Aaliyah had been vocal about her admiration for Janet Jackson. "I am a huge fan of Janet," she told Rosie O'Donnell in 1997.
Janet Jackson penned a touching comment about the "Journey to the Past" singer on her 14th death anniversary in a handwritten note on Twitter.
"I know u r there shining down on me (from her 1997 hit "Together Again") #CoversationsInACafe," Janet captioned the photo of the note. The note read "What I shared with u [is] ever sacred, everlasting, [and] it's pure and it will endure. I love u Aaliyah. #RIP."
The "Are You That Somebody" singer had already planned to work with her idol Janet Jackson. "I try to mention her (Janet) in every interview because I want to meet her and maybe at some point in my career collaborate with her," Aaliyah said on several occasions, reported US Magazine. "The admiration turned out to be mutual."
The report added, "A duet with the young princess of R&B was on Jackson's wish list, too -- but Aaliyah died before they could make it happen."
Shortly after her death, Jackson dedicated the song "Come Back to Me" to the young singer in her concert. Janet was also a part of a tribute at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place about two weeks after the singer's plane crash.
In a 2006 interview, Jackson spoke about her first and only meeting with Aaliyah that had been orchestrated by their mutual friend, Missy Elliott.
"RIP Baby Girl," Elliott tweeted along with a screenshot of an article, referred to Aaliyah as a "sweet person with great, incredible talent."
P Diddy, Keyshia Cole, Timbaland and Usher also shared their respects, remembering Aaliyah celebrated life.
