This Kdrama couple made the news this week for two reasons. First, Jung Suk Won, an actor, known for his roles in "Iris 2" and "Rooftop Prince," proposed to the pop ballad singer Baek Ji Young on stage. He asked her to marry him during her first nationwide concert in seven years. His surprise proposal was so romantic that it could have been a scene out of a kdrama.
Jung, 27, enlisted the help of his bride-to-be's management agency to help keep his proposal plan a secret. Then he climbed on stage, handed her a rose and asked the singer to marry him.
Baek, 36, was so surprised that she began to cry and then she said, "Of course."
The audience went crazy and started chanting for them to kiss. They had to comply and that made fans even happier.
To propose to his girlfriend of two years, the actor had to take a short break from the film he was currently shooting, "N.L.L.-The War of Yeon Pyeong."
"I came here without letting Baek Ji Young know," said Jung Suk Won, when he was interviewed after the proposal. "I really wanted to propose to her, but we were both so busy. So, today I asked my movie director to free up some time for me and now I'm here."
News of the couple's plan to marry on June 2 was quickly eclipsed by news that they were going to be parents this fall.
The bride, who appears on the Mnet "Voice Korea Season 2" show as a vocal coach, is four months pregnant. The couple, who met through mutual friends, has always been very honest about their relationship, but they hesitated about disclosing the pregnancy, worried how fans might react.
Only a few months before Baek was quoted as saying that she had no marriage plans but starting a family can change your mind.
"When I was in my early 20's, I wanted a fairy tale romance, while in my mid-20's, I wanted someone I could depend on," said Baek. "In my early 30's, I wanted a friend, and now, I need a family, someone who will always be on my side."
The singer began her music career in 1999 with her first album, "Sorrow." Her first single, "Choice" was noteworthy for being a Korean pop song with a Latin beat. Recent developments in her long and successful career include a ballad titled "Voice" which features Gary from Leessang, and "Good Boy" which features Yong Jin Hyung of B2st.
Only a few months ago, Jung was asked to comment on rumors that the couple had broken up. He said they were not true.
"After I have arguments with Baek Ji Young, I miss her even more," said Jung, who has appeared in 18 kdramas. "She's precious and very necessary in my life. I didn't think she'd be 'the one' in my life when I first saw her but she is."
