The latest NBA trade rumors suggest that the Portland Trail Blazers and the Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to resuscitate what seemed to be a dead deal.
Early this week, Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer posted a cryptic tweet about trade negotiations happening between the two teams.
"I'm told Blazers and T'Wolves are working on a major deal," he posted.
"Could all fall apart, but something is going on with cap room.
Bonnell quickly updated the tweet, a few minutes later explaining that Minnesota Timberwolves were previously exploring trade options. He, however, added that the negotiations have stopped.
Although, nothing technically happened, Fansided reported that the NBA trade rumor started with the Timberwolves need to lessen its salary expenses.
"The Timberwolves are slightly above the $70.0M salary cap at $73.6M, where the Trail Blazers are significantly below the $56.8M cap floor with only $48.3M," it reported.
"If the Trail Blazers took on one of the Timberwolves' larger contracts, both teams would move into more favorable financial standing."
The publication further speculated that the team was trying to trade Nikola Pekovic. It was said that the Timberwolves were "struggling" to find room for him and Gorgui Dieng at the center. With the addition of Karl-Anthony Towns, it just got even more difficult.
"It is no longer worth paying Pekovic $12M per season (for three more seasons) to either sit on the bench or take valuable playing time away from his more promising teammates," David MacKay of Fansided pointed out.
It was said that the Trail Blazers was previously interested in Nikola Pekovic, however, with his recent stats the interest just wanes away. Because of his injuries, the star only played 31 games this season.
The team reportedly has a core of young frontcourt players. It allegedly would not make sense if the team would absorb Pekovic.
