Serena's opponent Russian player Vitalia Diatchenko retired at 6-2 2-0 down due to leg injury.
Serena Williams praised her 25-year-old Russian competitor. "I told her I was proud of her for coming out and making this effort, knowing she was injured, that's a great effort," Williams said (source). The match lasted only 37 points out of which Serena won 32. In the second round, Serena Williams will play 23-year-old Dutch tennis player, Kiki 'van' Bertens.
US Open 2015 has proved to be a grand opener for 29-year-old Rafael Nadal who seeded eighth, as 18-year-old Borna Coric had to bow out after 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4 defeat. Spaniard Nadal could not play US Open last year due to a wrist injury. Coric defeated Nadal in straight sets during an October 2014 match played in Switzerland, reported BDLive.
The comeback this year by Rafael Nadal is admirable as he moves forward to round two. The Spanish tennis player showed some of his best form and dominated the first two sets when he played against the Croatian. "I was able to play aggressive in the fourth,"said Nadal. "He is an amazing player and has a great future."
"I think I started playing well," said the Spaniard. Nadal added, "The first two sets was a very high level for me, then I got a little bit tired."
World's number one top-seeded Novak Djokovic who is also a former champion at US Open maintained his position and won in the season's final in straight sets. In the first round, Djokovic stayed firm in his game to defeat Joao Souza by 6-1 6-1 6-1.
Japanese player Kei Nishikori who was seeded fourth was beaten by Benoit Paire at 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4. After losing to French Paire, Kei expressed that he is feeling very bad that he lost at the start only. The first round is important to set a foot but he is out in the first round itself. The 25-years-old Japanese tennis player told BBC, "I think he was playing good tennis so I don't think I played bad."
