Kim Davis, county clerk denied marriage licenses to gay couples on Tuesday in direct defiance of the federal courts, citing God's authority as her reason. Kim also vowed that she would not be resigning for her actions, even if she has to face jail time.
"It is not a light issue for me," Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis said through her lawyers. "It is a heaven or hell decision."
An awkward scene unfolded shortly after 8 a.m., at the Rowan County Courthouse when two same sex couples walked into the county clerk's office. A swarm of journalists and protesters followed the couple after they were denied their license. One couple, David Moore and David Ermold tried to engage Kim Davis for a debate before the cameras but the country clerk avoided the media.
Kim Davis repeatedly said that she would not issue any licenses to any gay or straight couples. When asked about her authority for denying marriage licenses, the County Clerk bluntly said, "Under God's authority", reported New York Times.
Journalists tailed another couple, Karen Roberts and April Miller, hours after the Supreme Court rejected Kim's last-ditch request for a delay. They were still there when the doors opened Tuesday morning.
The couple hoped that Kim Davis would accept that she has lost the fight and will issue marriage license to the couple. Instead, the county clerk once again turned them away. David Ermold told her that they all are not leaving the premises without getting the marriage license. To which the clerk said, "Then you're going to have a long day".
According to Yahoo News, David Ermold and David Moore have filed a complaint against county clerk Kim Davis on grounds of misconduct, irresponsible use of authority for denying marriage permits. Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway is studying the case and will soon appoint a special prosecutor to look into the matter.
