When Charlie Hunnam dropped out of starring in "Fifty Shades of Grey," many of his fans thought it was a smart career move. However, Hunnam thought. The "Sons of Anarchy" star was apparently so devastated over not able to play the role of Christian Grey that he cried his eyes out.

In an interview with V Man, reported via People, Charlie Hunnam said that leaving "Fifty Shades" franchise was among the worst professional decisions of his life.

"It was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I've ever had to deal with professionally. It was heartbreaking," he said.

Despite wanting to take on the role of billionaire Christian Grey, which ultimately went to Jamie Dornan, Charlie Hunnam had scheduling conflicts. At the time of "Fifty Shades of Grey" pre-production, Charlie had already committed to Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak."

"I'd given Guillermo my word, over a year before, that I was going to do this film," Charlie said. "People were saying, 'Are you crazy? Guillermo still has got four months to recast, it's the fourth lead, you can go and do this [instead].' I said, 'I can't. He's my friend.'"

Charlie Hunnam said that he feels great for keeping his words to Guillermo but at the same time, it was extremely hard for him to share the news with Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed "Fifty Shades of Grey."

According to People, Charlie called her on her phone and they both cried their eyes out for 20 minutes. "I needed to tell her that this was not going to work," Charlie added. "I just didn't know what to do."

PopSugar said Charlie Hunnam also shot down rumours that he was too bashful to abandon the hilariously scripted sex scenes in "Fifty Shades of Grey."
