The live-action adaptation of "Akira" has been in development for the better part of the last few years. Earlier it was reported that Jaume Collet-Serra showed interest to direct the film with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart playing the leads in the movie. Now there are rumours that the man who gave the world films like "Inception," "Interstellar," and "Batman Trilogy" is going to direct "Akira."
Warner Bros. wanted to make a live-action "Akira" movie from a long time. In 2013, it was reported that Jaume Collet-Serra has again shown interest in directing the film but not much has been heard about him and the status of the film since then. The only major development was that Marco Ramirez, the show runner of Season 2 of "Daredevil" was tapped to pen the new script.

According to Geek Blog, Den of Geek, Warner Bros. wants to make not one but three "Akira" movies and they have asked Christopher Nolan to direct the most anticipated movie.
The story of "Akira" is set during a dystopian version of Tokyo where it follows the life of a teenage biker Tetsuo Shima who has psychic powers and Shotaro Kaneda who is Tetsuo Shima's best friend and leader of their biker gang. Shotaro Kaneda tries to stop Tetsuo from releasing the imprisoned psychic called Akira. The animated film was received very well and instantly became a cult classic.
After the directing "Dark Knight" trilogy and "Interstellar" Nolan has handled the roles of Executive Producer for quite some time. According to the Geek Blog, the movie might get a July 2017 release.
According to Den of Geek, Leonardo DiCaprio will produce "Akira" film by his Appian Way Production Company along with Mad Chance and Andrew Lazar. There is no official statement from any representatives but one thing is sure, if Nolan is directing the project then he will give altogether a different feel to "Akira."
