Virtual reality headsets as a concept has been around for some time. Oculus from Oculus Rift to HTC's Vive headset provides an immersive experience for consumers; this includes movies, games, viewing photos or any other use they can come up with, said Irish Times. Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets are ready to be launched in the first quarter of 2016.
Inventor of the Oculus Rift, Palmer Luckey has listed the price for the upcoming VR headset which will be around $300 - $350 for DK1 and DK2 development kits. The Rift is the headset that sparked the impending virtual reality revolution and is one of the big three heading to shops over the next year, reported International Business Times.
"You know, I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. We're roughly in that ballpark... but it's going to cost more than that and the reason for that is that we've added a lot of technology to this thing beyond what existed in the DK1 and DK2 days," said Luckey to Road To VR in an interview during the Oculus Connect developer conference in late September.
Oculus is also trying to work on virtual reality movies while some companies like Microsoft are trying to work on virtual reality graphics, said NDTV. He also added that the cost of making every virtual reality headset unique is also becoming expensive. The components to make the equipments including custom hardware were also quite expensive. In May, the cost of buying and using an Oculus Rift, including a computer capable of running the games and software, will be around $1,500, said International Business Times.
Companies like Microsoft and Sony are also venturing into the virtual reality game segment but Oculus remains the market leaders in the segment.
