Angelina Jolie's cancer battle has created awareness among women regarding breast cancer as well as breast reconstructive surgery, reported a new study carried out at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
In a study published in the journal of the American Cancer Society, Dr Judy Garber of Dana Farber Cancer Institute reported that there is a 20 percent increase in women requesting for genetic breast cancer screening after Jolie's announcement of breast cancer and related problems in March 2013, according to WHDH.
Dr David Benjamin Lumenta, of Medical University of Graz noted that "The key finding was that Mrs. Jolie's announcement did indeed affect the public opinion going beyond gene-positivity [and] actually improving the awareness that breast reconstruction can be achieved with the use of one's own tissue and that it can be done during the breast-removal operation," reported The Globe And Mail.
Angelina Jolie Cancer Revelation Increases Awareness Among Women
In 2013 Jolie shared in New York Times about her family history of breast cancer and the presence of gene variant and its effect on breast and ovarian cancer. She also discussed double mastectomy and breast reconstructive surgery with using the patient's own tissue.
After the actress' opening up in public about her health issues there is a considerable increase in women getting screened for gene variants known as BRCA 1 and 2 which increases the risk of breast cancer.
Researchers compared data obtained online from 1000 women in March and June 2013 where they observed 19 percent increased breast cancer awareness regarding breast removal and reconstructive surgery among women. A jump in the percentage from 58 to 69 in women that understood breast reconstructive surgeries could be done with ones' one tissue after Jolie's revelation.
In a second study it was observed that about 20 percent of women were able to deal with breast cancer on a more personal level than before after Jolie's announcement in March.
