Another member of the imperial court has been cast for the 50-episode historical drama "Empress Qi," which was previously called "Hwatu."
This time it's Kim Seo Hyung. She will play the role of Queen Hwang and she admits that she is nervous.
"It's been a while," she said, referring to the almost two years that have passed since she appeared in her last drama.
Despite having worked with the writers twice before, she is both excited and tense.
"I can't wait to see what my third project with Jang Yung Chul and Jung Kyung Soon I is going to be like," said Kim.
Jang Young Chul and Jang Kyung Soon wrote the screenplay for two of Kim's previous dramas "History of the Salaryman" and "Giant."
"Part of the tension I feel is that this will be my first historical drama," said Kim.
The character she will play is pretty intense too. The proud, regal Queen Hwang will be a political rival for the character of Empress Qi, portrayed by Ha Ji Won. The Queen considers Ha Ji Won's character an upstart.
That's because the real-life Empress Qi did not start out as royalty. Although a well-born woman in the Goryeo era, she was sent to China as a tribute and became the imperial consort of the Chinese Emperor Huizong. She was said to be beautiful and talented in singing, dancing and composing poetry. After bearing the emperor a son, she became an empress.
History notes that she was a very influential woman, dominating Genghis Khan's Yuan Dynasty for 37 years and often helping to influence decisions that favored her homeland.
Joo Jin Moo, who played the cruel king in the film "A Frozen Flower" with Jo In Sung, will play the role of her royal husband Emperor Huizong. He has not been in a drama for four years.
Before she took her break from dramas, Kim appeared in "Mom Is Acting Up," "My Husband Got A Family," "History of a Salaryman" and "Giant."
Also starring in "Empress Ki" are Jin Yi Han as Tal Tal, Choi Moo Sung, as Park Bul Hwa, Lee Won Jung as Eunuch Dokman Jila and Yoon Ah Jung as Princess Kyung Hwa. It also stars Jung Woong In, who played the villain in "I Hear Your Voice" as Yeom Byung Soo.
The drama will be filmed in China and is scheduled to take over the timeslot of "Goddess of Fire: Jeonji" in October.
