The Seoul Family Court has ordered Kim Hyun Joong to take a paternity test to determine whether he is the father of his ex-girlfriend's son.
On December 9, Judge Hyun Kyung ordered Kim and his ex, named only as Miss Choi, to submit to paternity tests.
Choi filed a paternity suit against Kim in September. His legal team agreed to the test but she expressed concern about the partiality of the private company his team wanted to hire to conduct the test. She refused his offer. As mandated by the court, the test will now be conducted in Seoul University Hospital.
According to Choi's lawyer Sun Jong Moon, the test will take place within the month. If Kim Hyun Joong does not comply with the test, he will face a fine of approximately $8,500.
"Kim Hyun Joong and Ms. Choi will take DNA tests to prove the child's parentage at a hospital on December 14," said Sun. "The results will be available within a week.Kim Hyun Joong's paternity will be established then."
Choi's child, a son, was born in September, and is reportedly doing well. In September, Kim's lawyer Lee Jae Man stated that if Kim is indeed the child's father, he will take full responsibility.
Kim Hyun Joong enlisted for his mandatory two-year military duty in May and is stationed in Paju, Gyeonggi Do. He reportedly has not yet seen the child.
Choi filed four charges of assault against Kim in 2014, eventually dropping three of the charges. Kim and Choi reached a financial settlement barring her from discussing the charges. Kim had to pay a fine for the one charge that remained.
After that Kim and Choi reunited and vacationed together, then broke up. In January Choi announced she was pregnant with the singer-actor's child.
Choi sued Kim Hyun Joong this year, saying that the previous assault charges resulted in her having a miscarriage. He denied the miscarriage and counter-sued Choi for discussing the assault case as her not discussing it was one of the conditions of their financial settlement.
