The tvN drama "Cheese in the Trap" earned 7 percent in the ratings, which is high for a cable program. While there's much to like in this webtoon-based drama, actress Kim Go Eun says that part of the appeal is the way college students are portrayed.
"The reason that the drama is so popular is because of the way people connect with it," said Kim in a recent interview with the Korean media outlet OSEN. "All the characters in the drama are the kind of people you might encounter in real life."
So, how real is Kim's "Cheese in the Trap" character Hong Seol? Hardworking Hong Seol is a good friend, a dedicated student, and a devoted daughter. She's loyal and honest but she's sometimes afraid to express herself, especially when doubting her boyfriend Yoo Jung, played by Park Hae Jin.
Kim can really relate to some of her character's personality traits.
"We are both honest when it comes to work or love," said Kim. "Why hold it in when you're angry? Hong Seol takes her time to think about things and I don't think that's a healthy attitude. I usually just tell people what's on my mind."
In the drama she is wooed by both Yoo Jung and Baek In Ho, played by Seo Kang Joon. They both adore her. Which character would she date in real life? Just like her character Hong Seol, Kim has to be honest. Neither.
Instead she would prefer the character who is paired up with her drama best friend Jang Bo Ra, played by Park Min Ji. Jang's devoted boyfriend Eun Taek is played by actor Nam Joo Hyuk.
"Eun Taek is my style," said Kim. "I would fall for him. He's honest with his feelings. I would not be happy with Yoo Jung. I would fight a lot with In Ho. Eun Taek is younger. Unfortunately, I don't like men younger than me because I am still young."
"Cheese in the Trap" is Kim's first drama role. The 25-year-old actress appeared in three films in 2015. She starred in "Memories of the Sword" with Lee Byung Hun and Jeon Do Yeon, "Coin Locker Girl with Kim Hye Soo, Park Bo Gum and Uhm Tae Goo, and "The Advocate: A Missing Body" with Lee Sun Kyun.
