A life of struggle and survival, Sulli's experiences were revealed through the new MBC documentary, with her mother and Girls' Generation's Tiffany's narration.
On September 10, for the first time, the late singer-actress' mother appeared on camera and shared things about her childhood years and relationship with Choiza in a documentary video, titled "Why Were You Uncomfortable With Sulli?"
According to the mother, the growing years for Sulli was hard since the divorce happened when Sulli was only 7 years old. In order for them to survive and send Sulli to school, her mother chose to send her to an acting academy in Busan.
From then on, she spent her growing up years in Seoul and entered acting at an early age. Almost losing their money for expenses, Sulli was cast in a drama "Ballad of Seodong" that helped them endure the financial predicament. The director of the said drama adored Sulli's acting performance.
Back then, a written article about Sulli's performance captured SM Entertainment's attention and offered to build Sulli as their franchise star celebrity. It was the assurance of Sulli's journey in the entertainment world and started living in a dorm away from her mother at a young age.
Sulli started living in the dormitory at fifth grade and met Girls' Generation's Tiffany and Taeyeon as they started working hard, building their career.
Tiffany shared that Sulli was cautious of the people around her. She continued that Sulli was happy she had unnies living with her and that she felt sad while watching their past clips together. Tiffany responded, "We all needed help in many ways, including me."
When Sulli graduated in elementary, she grew tall and seldom got projects as a child star. The agency decided to take the route of an idol for Sulli's next project.
It was in 2015 that news broke out about Sulli's romantic relationship with Choiza, a 14-year gap that surprised her mother. When asked about the news, Sulli admitted to her mother that the family disapproved. It was then the start that they seldom talked and grew apart. Sulli's relationship with Choiza lasted for almost 3 years.
According to her mother, the ended relationship might have been one of Sulli's painful struggles, knowing that she fought for their love from her family and received malicious comments about it. Her mother felt that Sulli felt alone and no one to talk to that urged her to be in a low state.
Sulli took her own life in October of 2019 after many years of fighting for what she believed in and doing what she was happy about. When her mother visited her house at the time of her death, she found a lot of medicine bags, which made her think how her daughter struggled so hard in surviving on her own.
"I regret knowing only now. I wasn't able to say a proper goodbye when I saw her body for the last time. I could have brought her outside and held her hands," she said.
In one of Sulli's past interviews, she said, "People thought I am very mature since I started working at an early age. Though I say I am having a hard time, no one would listen to me."
