December is indeed a busy month for all the K-drama fans, as programs and shows have a jam-packed schedule at this time of the year.
2020 has been a tough year, but we remained entertained thanks to the Hallyu wave. And to recognize and appreciate everyone's favorite dramas and actors in the industry, different award ceremonies have been held as per tradition in the Korean entertainment world.
May it be a drama or awards show, all programs compete for the highest nationwide ratings. According to Nielsen Korea, on Dec. 30, the 2020 MBC Drama Awards garnered an average rating of between 3.8 and 4.5 percent nationwide. It has also been said that it dipped compared with the show's previous rating when it was held on Dec. 29, which received 6.3 and 7.3 percent. Overall, the MBC Drama Awards had gained 7.1 and 8.6 percent in nationwide ratings from the previous year, 2019, which is higher than this year (2020).
Meanwhile, SBS's "K-Trot in Town" recorded an average rating of 10.5 and 11.4 percent. The show also aired at the same time as the 2020 MBC Drama Awards.
If Korean award shows are receiving many viewers, that doesn't mean that K-dramas aren't also gaining much attention. Although slight drops in ratings could be seen like in KBS's new series "Cheat on Me If You Can," starring "Parasite" actress Cho Yeo Jeong and actor Ko Jun. The show received 2.4 and 3.6 percent ratings, which slightly dropped from their previous episode with 2.9 and 3.8 percent average ratings. Due to the 2020 KBS Entertainment Awards, KBS dramas scheduled were put on hold.
JTBC's drama "Run On" also decreased their nationwide ratings; from their last week's schedule (Dec. 23), wherein they recorded viewership ratings of 2.806 percent. This week, it slightly dropped to 2.794 percent.
On the other hand, tvN's romantic comedy-drama "True Beauty" takes a hiatus in the last remaining days of December due to special end-of-year broadcasts. Also, some of its cast was placed on quarantine after being exposed to a COVID positive staff. So its 7th and 8th episodes, which were initially scheduled to air on Dec. 30 and 31, respectively, were moved to Jan. 6 and 7, 2021.
Meanwhile, "The Uncanny Counter" was the first drama to postpone its scheduled broadcast and will be back on Jan. 2 and 3, 2021. Nonetheless, the drama has been breaking its own rating records due to its high viewership nationwide.
Many Korean dramas were put on hold due to some year-end shows, so a lot of viewers are left hanging. However, this adds to the excitement that comes in anticipation of the upcoming episodes of everyone's favorite Korean series.
