From real-life events to scripts and to a real-life couple. "Crash Landing On You" is indeed one of the realist stories that happened in the K-drama scene.
After the success of the smashing hit Korean drama "Crash Landing On You" in 2020, many citizens from all over the world were curious about the unique plot of one of their favorite series.
From Real to Reel
Recently, the person behind this masterpiece was featured in an interview. Writer Park Ji Eun, who penned the script of the phenomenal K-drama, enthusiastically shared the behind the scene process of her work and what inspired her to write the drama.
According to her, she got the idea of a South Korean woman unexpectedly and accidentally landing in the North when an event happened 12 years ago, involving Korean actress Jung Yang.
It was 2008 when actress Jung Yang and her (three) friends left the shores of Incheon to test and check run a boat. While in the middle of testing the boat, they decided to stop by at the nearest island to have their lunch before continuing sailing again. Unfortunately, Jung Yang and her friends were lost because of a thick fog in their area, making them loose adrift for about two hours before they knew that they were already about to encounter a North Korean fishing boat near the NLL or known as Northern Limit Line.
Jung Yang and her friends saw a fisherman, but they were in shock when they heard him using the North Korean accents; because of this, they immediately turned the boat and called for emergency help to the coast guard. They were relieved when the girls were finally rescued by a South Korean naval ship.
The incident has been all over the news at that time, and eventually, writer Park Ji Eun was in the stage of writing the drama "My Wife Is A Superwoman." She remembered the event and thought of ideas if she could get inspiration from the unexpected encounter of Jung Yang and her friends.
Park Ji Eun's "Crash Landing On You" Was A Masterpiece
Park Ji Eun explained "At that time year 2008, I was preparing for the drama "My Wife Is A Superwoman," and as a promising writer, an actress took a ferry from Incheon and was entangled in an unexpected situation. When she came to, she found herself near the shores of North Korea, and the North Korean coast guard was chasing after her."
The incident that occurred gave her the idea that evidently, that kind of unbelievable event could actually happen in real life. The writer went on, "That was one of the major incidents that was on the headlines. And that was the first time I realized, that 'Is North Korea that close? Is it so close that you can get there after letting your mind slip for just a matter of seconds?.'"
And on the same day before, Park Ji Eun wanted to write a simple yet fun story that many people would enjoy. She can't believe that she was able to bring together people from South and North in one picture.
Because of the unexpected event, writer Park Ji Eun used the magic of her imagination and skills in writing to produce such a beautiful and unique story that now became one of the beautiful masterpieces in the history of K-drama.
From a real life event, she finished a script and made it on the small screen. Portrayed by two of the prominent artists in the Korean entertainment industry, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin. Because of this project, the two were also reunited and who would have thought that from an on screen partner, they are now one of the famous celebrity couples that are loved by many.
