‘Minari’ Star Youn Yuh Jung Scores a Major Win at the 27th SAG Awards

"Minari" star Youn Yuh Jung is slowly conquering the international scene by storm after bagging a major win at the 27th SAG Awards.

The veteran South Korean actress has managed to take home the "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role" award with her amazing portrayal as the grandmother Soonja for the 2020 drama film written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

With this, she eclipsed her fellow nominees, including British actress Olivia Colman (The Father), Maria Bakalova (Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm), award-winning Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), and Helena Zengel (News of the World).

Moreover, the 73-year-old also broke another history as the first Asian female winner as well as the first Asian woman to ever win in any individual SAG category for a motion picture.

To recall, Sandra Oh, whose parents are both Korean but grew up in Canada, is the only Asian woman who bagged an individual SAG Award for TV category.

Youn Yuh Jung Delivered a Heartwarming Speech as She Accepts Her SAG Award

During her acceptance speech, Youn Yuh Jung seemed surprised after the presenter named her as the winner for the category of "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role."

She admitted that there are no words to describe how she felt after "being recognized by Westerners."

At one point, she even asked her fellow nominees if she was saying things right of her English was on the right track, to which they all agreed as they all celebrated her win.

Furthermore, she continued and went to thank the "Minari" director for choosing her to join the cast, as well as her co-nominees.

"My English is not perfect," she said, adding, "I'm really pleased and happy, and thank you for the SAG-AFTRA. Thank you, so much thank you, Olivia, Glenn, Maria, and everybody. Thank you."

Youn Yuh Jung Nominated for Oscars

Aside from her big win at the recently concluded SAG Awards, Youn Yuh Jung is also nominated at the prestigious 93rd Academy Awards for "Best Supporting Actress."

At the time, she expressed her gratitude for being recognized in the international scene, adding that the nomination itself was as good as winning the award.

"I'm so honored to get a nomination at the Academy Awards. As all five candidates have done their best in their respective movies, I think being nominated is just like being awarded."

"Minari" also received a total of six nods for this year's Oscars, which includes major categories such as Best Actor, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

The list of achievements goes on and on with the critically acclaimed movie.

To recall, "Minari" previously won awards such as the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer for Alan S. Kim, Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Apart from its major wins, the Oscar-nominated film secured the number one spot at the Korean box office for weeks since its debut.

According to Variety, during its third-week reign, the Lee Isaac Chung directed movie raked in a total of $5.63 million.
