‘Parasite’ Director Bong Joon-ho Donates $267,000 to Support Korean Independent Films

Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho, who is the man behind the critically acclaimed film "Parasite" is paying back to the film industry.

The 51-year-old director expresses his support to the Korean independent films by donating $267,000 or 300 million won.

In a recent report, his agency Barunson E&A released an official statement saying that the renowned filmmaker is "who was selected as the winner of the '2021 Samsung Hoam Award' in the art award category, will donate 300 million won to the support project for the development of independent films."

Moreover, the press release also includes that the details behind this will be discussed alongside the independent film officials to be able to provide assistance and support to the independent and short film directors.

The recently concluded 'Samsung Ho-Am Award recognizes personalities who have made a significant contribution to the industry of engineering, science, medicine, art, and community service.

In addition, the winners of this annual event were selected by the Samsung Ho-Am Foundation and will receive medals, certificates, and cash prizes.

Following the international success of his 2019 movie "parasite," the succeeding years have been a whirlwind for the famous director.

He scored numerous awards, including the top prize at the Cannes film festival, British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA,) bagging three major categories at the recently held Academy Awards, and being nominated at the prestigious Golden Globes.

In a previous interview with The Guardian, the "Okja" director revealed what pushed him to create one of his biggest movies, which is "Parasite."

Bong Joon-ho mentioned that he thought of doing a Korean movie when he was still working on his 2013 film "Snowpiercer."

During the interview, the award-winning filmmaker revealed the symbolism of the movie and said that it depicts the true face of South Korea.

He described his home country who has a "very rich and glamorous" surface through the high technology and the rise of the Kpop industry.

Unfortunately, this is only a facade adding that the "relative wealth between rich and poor is widening," making the younger generation feel discouraged and hopeless.

"Parasite" is a black comedy thriller film that follows the struggling lives of the Kim family, who finds the opportunity to work alongside the wealthy Park family.

In the movie, they featured how the family, headed by their patriarch Ki-Taek secretly starts living a parasitic life within the Park household.

In his interview, he also mentioned how the Kim family portrayed a very unified and hard-working family.

"It's not as if they have shortcomings or they are lazy. It's just that they can't get proper jobs," he explained. This is in reference to hundreds of college students who can't afford to land any decent jobs.

Aside from its intriguing storyline, the critically acclaimed movie showcases its powerhouse cast, including Song Kang-Ho, Jang Hye-Jin, Choi Woo-Sik, and "Record of Youth" star Park So-Dam.
