Another JTBC Kdrama is in the hot seat after Jung Hae In and BLACKPINK Jisoo's "Snowdrop" faced a wave of controversy over historical distortion.

"Until the Morning Comes," starring Jung Yu Mi and Han Suk Kyu, might encounter the same issue as the upcoming series was slammed with allegations about glamorizing the Chinese communist party.

The mystery-crime drama is based on the Chinese novel "The Long Night" written by Zi Jinchen.

It follows the story of a prosecutor who decides to reinvestigate a cold case that took place decades ago.

However, a media outlet noted that the said novel was also engulfed in an issue and got criticized for romanticizing the rulings under Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping.

After the JTBC confirmed the drama lineup in 2020, several netizens were angered by the fact that the novel was being remade into a series.

Moreover, it also raises the suspicion of propagating the Chinese government.

With this, the broadcast network addressed the issue and noted that "There is no need to worry about this work because the original work (not Chinese capital) is being purchased by the production company."

Did the Production of 'Until the Morning Comes' Halted Because of the 'Snowdrop Controversy?

According to outlets, the upcoming drama "Until the Morning Comes" is set to broadcast right after "Snowdrop" airs its finale; however, it reportedly stopped the production after wrapping up episode 8.

Although the drama officials did not disclose its reason, others believe that this is in line with the wave of backlash that Jung Hae In and BLACKPINK Jisoo's Kdrama have been receiving.

To recall, after "Snowdrop" episode 1 aired, a petition to cancel the melodrama reached the Blue House or the residence of South Korea's head of state, gaining over 200,000 signatures.

The appeal states that the drama distorts historical facts which happen in one of the most pivotal times of the country and romanticizes the main character, who is a spy.

"Many activists were tortured and died upon being falsely accused of being North Korean spies. I believe that the drama's content defames the value and reputation of the democratization movement," the petition reads as obtained by local outlets.

However, JTBC reiterated that "Snowdrop" features a "fictional story" and a "creative work that shows personal stories of individuals who were used and victimized by those in power."

In addition, the broadcast network says that they are continuing the broadcast, but as for the historical distortion allegation, they assure that it "will be settled through the progress of the drama's plot."

Moreover, JTBC also encourages viewers to "watch over the future progress of the plot" and how the story will unfold.

To recall, this is the second time that "Snowdrop" received a petition to cancel its broadcast. The first was filed back in March 2021 after the drama's synopsis leaked over the internet.
