'Thirty-Nine' Writer Yoo Young Ah Opens Up About Inspirations in Creating the Drama

JTBC's forthcoming romance drama "Thirty-Nine" starring Son Ye Jin, Jeon Mi Do and Kim Ji Hyun tells the story of three best friends who are about to turn 40. It depicts the day-to-day lives of three women which are filled with problems, successes, love and more.

The drama is penned by "Encounter" writer, Yoo Young Ah. She revealed that the drama was intended to be a film with the title, "Thirty, One, Two, Three."

For the writer, the drama is a work that is close to her heart, which she has been unable to let go for a very long while.

When asked why she changed the title and what the age 39 means to her, the writer answered, "The age 30 seemed so awesome to me when I was in my early twenties."

"I looked forward to it once I turned 29," she shared. "However, when I turned 30, nothing changed. Life was exhausting in itself, and I wasn't feeling any new emotions. It's an age where you just have to keep holding on."

When the writer turned 39, she felt the immense pressure of finally being almost 40, the age of being stable, firm and strong.

"Now that I'm 49 and about to turn 50, 39 is my youth, too," she explained. "I want to show the nerves, the temptations and realizations one faces in their late 30s."

Although the drama has heavy themes like terminal illness and adoption, the drama approaches these subjects in a lighthearted manner with sincerity.

Yoo Young Ah once read a book that tells happiness from material things expires faster than expected, while unhappiness from bad relationships runs deep and stings for a long time.

The trio displayed top notch performances in many dramas like "Crash Landing on You," "Hospital Playlist" and "Artificial City," to name a few.

According to the writer, the three lead actresses are much more beautiful and charming when you meet them in person.

"I'm surprised at the cast members' casting," Yoo Young Ah admits. "But I'm so thankful for the three beautiful actresses. They gave their characters even more color and depth."

Yoo Young Ah chose the word "top notch" to describe the three stars, who transformed her characters into people who live life and have a great personality.
