Yoo Ah In’s Propofol Use Linked To His ‘Phobia of Needles’ Says Agency

Yoo Ah In's agency clarified reports about the actor's ongoing investigation after suspicion of using an illegal substance.

On March 2, authorities revealed that the "Chicago Typewriter" star tested positive on four types of drugs after conducting a series of urine and hair strand tests on February 5. The award-winning top star also tested positive for hemp, propofol, cocaine, and ketamine.

Amid the probe, Yoo Ah In's agency, UAA (United Artists Agency) clarified that these types of substances are linked to his health problems.

According to a news portal, MBC News Desk cited authorities' suspicion regarding his use of propofol use "was given because he requested sleep anesthesia even for a simple procedure."

However, Yoo Ah In's side explained that the actor suffers from a skin disease and has a "phobia of needles"; hence, he requested sleep anesthesia.

As for the other substances, his agency wasn't able to elaborate on the actor's use of cocaine but mentioned that ketamine is "sleep anesthesia and medical purposes."

According to outlets, ketamine is a type of anesthetic used to relieve pain and induce a loss of consciousness. Unfortunately, it is commonly abused for its hallucinogenic and dissociative effects and also comes in various forms.

Meanwhile, propofol is also commonly used in a hospital setting as an anesthetic and a sedative and used before and after operations or surgeries. Long-term use of propofol may lead to serious allergic reactions, which can be life-threatening.

Yoo Ah In continued to make headlines after police began the probe regarding the actor's use of the illegal substance.

From the search and seizure of various doctor's offices and clinics in Seoul, the award-winning star was also barred from leaving the country until the investigation is done.

At the height of the controversy, his agency pointed out that the "Seoul Vibe" star is "actively cooperating in all investigations." Unfortunately, the drug scandal had a negative effect on his image. Brands pulled out traces of Yoo Ah In's advertisements while his upcoming projects with Netflix are also affected.

"Goodbye Earth," which began its production in the second half of 2022, might also delay its premiere because of Yoo Ah In's drug issues.

In addition, he also stepped down from his role in "Hellbound 2." To recall, the actor was supposed to reprise his role as the cult leader Jung Jin Soo.

Following Yoo Ah In's withdrawal, "Out Beloved Summer" star Kim Sung Cheol will take over the role.
