Director Lee Jeong Hyo talks about his experience filming "Doona" and his working relationship with lead stars Bae Suzy and Yang Se Jong.
Known for his top-notch projects like "Crash Landing on You," "Romance is a Bonus Book," "Criminal Minds," and more, the filmaker once again delivered exceptional K-drama and left viewers wanting for more.
In an interview cited by a local media outlet, the director dishes on his expectations about the Netflix series.
'Doona' Director on Huge Sucess of Bae Suzy, Yang Se Jong's K-drama
Currently one of the most watched TV shows on Netflix worldwide, "Doona" ranked 5th, topping countries like Taiwan, Singapore, Qatar, and Malaysia, as cited by a streaming aggregator service, Flix Patrol.
On top of that, the nine-episode K-drama immediately enters the global ratings after the show's premiere.
According to the director, "Crash Landing on You" and "Doona" made him "realize the power of melodrama."
On the other hand, the webtoon-based K-drama offers a different premise than Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin's series.
"It focuses on deep emotional lines rather than narratives," he said, referring to "Doona."
'Doona' Director on Working With Bae Suzy and Yang Se Jong
According to the director, he is looking for an actress who can sing, dance, and act at the same time, and the first celebrity who came to mind was Bae Suzy.
"I thought Suzy was perfect in many ways, including singing and dancing, but when I was actually working on it, I thought that I should view Lee Doona as 'Suzy who played Doona," he furthered.
As for Yang Se Jong, director Lee Jeong Hyo sees the qualities of Lee Won Joon in him after seeing his previous works and thought that he was a "good match" for the character.
The director also added that they did have a good working relationship even off cam, adding "As we've become so close, it was very noisy every time we got together". This is also the reason why the lead stars had a great time filming the series.
Director Explains 'Doona' Ending
In the "Doona" ending, the 9-episode K-drama left viewers hanging after the series wrapped up with a cliffhanger.
With this, viewers speculate that "Doona" will have a sequel and can't wait to watch the story between Lee Doona and Lee Won Joon.
Although director Lee Jeong Hyo didn't talk about the possibility of having season 2, he explained why "Doona" ended that way.
According to him, it is a representation of the relationship between Doona and Won Joon, "which is like a fantasy, in a realistic way," he said, adding, "No matter where they are now, how they live, or whether they may meet each other again or not, they will always remember the other in their lives."
