In "You Who Came From The Stars," Jun Ji Hyun plays an actress who has been so spoiled and pampered that she no longer remembers how to be nice. She's bold, outspoken and sassy. She drinks and swears and has no consideration for her neighbors.
Which leads some to comment that her role as movie star Cheon Song Yi is merely a reprisal of her popular role in the successful 2001 film "Sassy Girl." The film was based on the true story of a man meeting a drunken girl on a train.
Partly because Cheon Song Yi doesn't listen to any of her advisers she will become involved in all sorts of scandals. For example, already in the first episodes the actress was advised not to make comments not cleared by management. As an example she talks about taking the narcotic propofol when she meant she was taking the harmless supplement bee propolis. And that incident did not teach her a lesson. Fortunately, resident alien Do Min Joon, played by Kim Soo Hyun, will be around to pick up the pieces as he has done before.
In an interview with the Korea Herald, she responded to the criticism that the characters were similar.
"Well, all the characters I play come out from me and it is natural that they reflect pieces of me," said Jun Ji Hyun. "I am not the kind of person who has multiple personas. It is natural that you may think that they look alike."
Kim Soo Hyun, who won praise for his performance of the young king in "Moon Embracing the Sun" worked with Jun Ji Hyun in "The Thieves." Knowing that she would appear in "You Who Came From The Stars" was definitely a selling point for him.
"I have to admit that one of the main attractions of the drama was working with her," said Kim. "On set, she really sets the atmosphere and she knows what to do. It really helps."
Director Jang Tae Yoo began his casting efforts by trying to snag the actress. Although the drama's writer Park Ji Eun was respected for his work on "My Husband Got A Family" and the director had worked on "Deep Rooted Tree" and "Painter of the Wind," they were not sure that the actress would be interested. She had not appeared in a drama for the last 13 years.
"Jun was the first person on the list for the Cheon character," said Jang Tae Yoo. "We wondered if she would really take it. When she did, we couldn't believe it. It was a dream come true and it will be the best romcom ever."
So far the drama is leading the ratings in its time slot and Jang Tae Yoo's casting choices have been met with approval. Viewers like Jun Ji Hyun's sassy character.
