Ryu Jun Yeol is once again under fire for promoting golf despite being a Greenpeace ambassador.
The actor continues to receive hate comments from netizens after the "Reply 1988" star confirmed his appearance at the 2024 Masters Par 3 contest.
The South Korean star is among the celebrities who are avid fans of golf; however, unlike the others, Ryu Jun Yeol has been receiving backlash for his contradicting stance regarding the environment.
Ryu Jun Yeol Slammed for Promoting Golf
The news came after Ryu Jun Yeol's agency, C-JeS Studio, announced that the actor would be participating in the golf tournament known as the Masters Par 3 contest.
"The Masters is a game in which participating players invite family members or friends to act as caddies for an event," the representative told My Daily, adding that Ryu Jun Yeol joined after being invited by celebrity friend Kim Joo Hyung.
Unfortunately, not everyone seemed excited about Ryu Jun Yeol's upcoming activity.
As mentioned in an online community, netizens were disappointed about the way he handled himself as a so-called environmentalist.
To recall, he is active in social environmental activism and was recognized by Forbes as "one of the most powerful celebrities in South Korea" for three years.
With this, he was declared the first East Asia's ambassador to Greenpeace in 2023, an independent global campaigning network that supports a sustainable and peaceful world for the future.
However, the actor's huge support for golf is being criticized by the public since it contradicts the organization's mission.
Unfortunately, the development of golf courses has a negative impact on the environment because it destroys natural habitats, leaving native species forced to leave their homes.
Due to the vast amount of land that is needed, creating golf courses leads to soil erosion and water pollution.
With this, netizens slammed the actor for actively supporting the sport.
In addition, some wanted Ryu Jun Yeol to speak up regarding his issue with environmentalism.
- "He should at least make a public statement that he gave up on protecting the environment."
- "Wow, he's already in such a huge controversy now; he really isn't reading the room."
- "He really can't read the room."
- "It looks like he hit the jackpot after giving up on polar bears."
To recall, Greenpeace previously expressed their stance regarding Ryu Jun Yeol's ambassadorship, adding that they are looking into the issue.
"One of Greenpeace's roles is to deliver a stronger and louder voice for citizens to drive changes within the government and corporations. We will take this opportunity to review and discuss regulations regarding promotional ambassadors," a representative mentioned, as obtained by a media outlet.
