Windows Phone 8.1 is the third generation Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile OS and succeeds Windows Phone 8.

On Feb. 10, the OS was on preview to developers and is slated for launch at Microsoft’s Build Developer Conference in San Francisco, California to be held from April 2-4, 2014.

First of all Windows Phone 8 phones can be upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1. The OS was initially codenamed ‘Windows Phone Blue.’ The OS would be a series of updates to the current Microsoft OS.

Rather than wait to bring new features to Windows Phone 8, Microsoft chose to add updates and new features to the existing mobile OS. The updates added “DataSense for non-Verizon devices, support for quad-core processors, 1080p high-definition screens of up to six inches, the addition of a "Driving Mode," and extra rows of live tiles for larger "phablet" devices.”

After the formal announcement in April, Windows Phone hardware is slated to arrive in June.
Windows phone devices including the end of the line Lumia 520 will receive the 8.1 update, according to wpcentral.com.

The 8.1 is believed to be a significant revamp to the Windows mobile OS, say analysts. After a series of General Distribution Releases or GDR updates, the 8.1 OS will give way to the ‘Threshold’ release in 2015, which would be Windows Phone 8.2. or possibly even Windows 9.

The touted feature on Windows 8.1 will be Cortana and photos and videos of it have already leaked. Cortana is to Microsoft as what Siri might be to the iPhone or Google Now to Android. The video on wpcentral.com is the first time Cortana has been showed to the public.
