Captain America: The Winter Soldier is box office gold. The Disney-Marvel movie has just broken the record for the biggest April movie of all time, to the tune of over $300 million. The flick beat Noah and Divergent, which are currently at number two and three respectively in the rankings.
As of April 6, 2014, Box Office Mojo has reported that Winter Soldier has reached a domestic total of a little over $95 million. Noah is at $17 million domestic, while Divergent is at $13 million domestic. Worldwide, Winter Soldier has earned more than $207 million so far, pushing total sales past $302 million. It has already surpassed the first Captain America flick, The First Avenger, by 47%. It is now ranked first for April movie opening weekends, and has dethroned last April's $86 million record set by Fast Five. It is also now on the record as third for spring opening weekends overall, just a little behind Alice in Wonderland at number two, and The Hunger Games at number one.
It is indeed a coup for Disney and Marvel to have such a successful release outside of summer, which is when blockbuster movies usually come out in theaters. Dave Hollis, head of worldwide theatrical distribution for Disney, told the Daily Mail that it was actually a conscious decision to schedule the movie's release date in spring. "We looked at the possibility of creating separation from the other summer tentpoles," he said.
It looks as if the studios timed it perfectly. Another Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, is set to be shown in theaters at the end of this summer after all.
Captain America: Winter Soldier continues the story of Steve Rogers, or his superhero identity, Captain America, after waking up a hero in a world that wasn't his own, and helping save the world with the Avengers. Now living in New York, trying to be a regular person, he was quickly sucked back in to superhero duties when S.H.I.E.L.D. gets compromised. Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and appears in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), and Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce).
